A scarce oversized concert poster for a run of four shows by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's at the Los Angeles Sports Arena from 30 October to 3 November 1980 in support of Springsteen's fifth studio album 'The River', released only two weeks prior. The same sober black and white photograph of Springsteen by Frank Stefanko was seen on the cover of the album. According to Stefanko, the image was an outtake from the photo sessions for 1978's 'Darkness on the Edge of Town', chosen by Springsteen while mixing 'The River'. Legendary among Springsteen fans, The River Tour kicked off on 3 October 1980 in Michigan and concluded almost a year later on 14 September 1981 in Cincinnati, after 140 shows across the US, Canada and Europe. It was during this tour that Springsteen's reputation for marathon performances really took hold, with sets extending to more than thirty songs and running up to four hours. Critic Robert Hilburn wrote that the album and "the extensive U.S. tour that immediately followed its release made Springsteen not just a critical but also popular favorite with rock & roll fans across the country. No longer was he seen as merely an East Coast critical phenomenon." Music writer Robert Santelli wrote that, "Eager to please old fans and make disciples of new ones, Springsteen and the band pushed the limits nearly every night, with shows that went on for three—and sometimes four—hours. These marathon performances were exhausting for band and audience alike. The sheer number of songs played, the range of emotions explored, and the between-songs stories told by Springsteen ... took the shows far beyond the usual rock concert. Each night turned into a hard-driving demonstration of how and why Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band had become the best rock act on the road."

Condition

Condition B Grade

Edge wear consistent with age and use. Small wrinkles repeated approx. every 2in. vertically through centre-left of poster from being bashed when rolled - some with fine surface loss and some (through central image) only visible from certain angles. A light 6in. bend to upper right corner. Areas of light surface abrasion to upper and lower margins. Would frame well as the majority of wear is peripheral.
