An eerie Yugoslavian poster for a 1950s re-release of the 1939 Universal horror Son of Frankenstein, the third film in the classic Universal Frankenstein series based on Mary Shelley's chilling gothic novel, and the follow-up to Bride of Frankenstein. Boris Karloff returned to reprise his definitive portrayal of the creature, which cemented the image of Frankenstein’s monster in our collective consciousness, starring alongside Basil Rathbone as the son of scientist Henry Frankenstein and Bela Lugosi in a scene-stealing performance as Ygor. Set against a garish green and blue ground, the monstrous visage, clawing hands and blood-red drips have a strikingly nightmarish impact, making this scarce poster from the former Yugoslavia a magnificent alternative to the exceptionally rare examples from the original 1939 release, which can change hands for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Condition

Excellent (A-)

Conservation backed on linen with no restoration. Backing has smoothed and diminished one vertical and one horizontal fold, minor nicks to edges and bumps to corners, and a small ½in. tear to right edge. A touch of light surface wear to crossfold. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
