Produced for London Midland & Scottish Railway and London & North Eastern Railway to promote rail travel to the Scottish Highlands, this scarce British quad royal travel poster by Norman Wilkinson (1882-1971) depicts a pleasure steamer on Loch Awe with a breathtaking mountain vista behind. The text beneath reads "What tales of the Clans lovely Loch Awe could tell! Set in the heart of the Campbell and MacGregor country in Argyllshire, it is one of the most beautiful and romantic lochs in Scotland, as well as being among the largest. To the North Ben Cruachan frowns on the deep Pass of Brander, where the Awe flows out to Loch Etive: and the ruins of Kilchurn Castle conjure up memories of Highland deeds and traditions. The waters of Loch Awe abound in salmon and trout. Pleasure steamers run from end to end of it in connection with tours from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oban, etc."

A renowned marine painter, Wilkinson was also a prolific poster artist, designing hundreds of for the British railway companies in the 1920s and 30s. Printed in Great Britain by John Horn Limited, London & Glasgow. An example of this poster is held in the Science Museum Group Collection, UK.

Condition

Minor nicks and creases to corners and edges, with a 1.5in. closed tear to upper edge in margin. Small tack remnant under upper right corner and small spot of thinning to lower left corner. A few grubby smudges and spots of light surface soiling. A tiny spot of sheer tissue adhered to "out" in text portion. Slight darkening to left edge. The odd light crease to artwork. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
