Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's would be Audrey Hepburn’s defining role, establishing her status as one of the greatest screen legends and style icons of all time. It seems unbelievable now that Truman Capote, author of the novella on which the movie was based, had his heart set on Marilyn Monroe for the part. Monroe pulled out of the running when her acting coach advised her not to play 'a lady of the night.' A moderate hit at the time, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actress for Hepburn, although only Henry Mancini won on the night for his jazzy score and haunting ballad Moon River. Decades later, the image of Hepburn as Holly Golightly with her high chignon, pearls and cigarette lighter is one of the most recognisable of the 20th Century. Renowned German poster artist Lutz Peltzer added an artfully colourful twist to the classic Hepburn image for the rare original German release, with popping purple gloves, jewel toned pearls and vibrant brow streaks, against a cyan New York skyline. A more commonly found 1980s re-release poster reworked the image with a set of white pearls.

Conservation backed on linen. Prior to backing this poster had one vertical and three horizontal folds with splits and light wear to crossfolds. Backing and light colour touching have smoothed and diminished fold lines and crossfolds. Minor colour touching to pinholes at corners. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
