With a retelling of a German fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, Walt Disney introduced a sceptical America to his first full-length cel animated feature film in 1937. Hailed as a landmark work of art, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a smash hit, paving the way for further Disney features including including Pinnochio (1940), Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942), and changing the course of movie history. Disney was awarded an honorary Oscar at the 11th Academy Awards for a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field. Adjusted for inflation, Snow White remains one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time. The popularity of the film has led to its being re-released theatrically many times. A rare find, this enchanting poster dates from a late 1950s re-release in Japan, following the first Japanese release of the film in 1950, when Hollywood films were screened widely throughout the country during the US occupation. The feature length Disney animation had a marked influence on a generation of Japanese animators, most notably the "Father of Manga" Osamu Tezuka.

Condition

Very Good (B+)

Conservation backed on linen. Prior to backing the poster had one vertical and one horizontal fold, minor handling wear to corners and edges, and two small tears to left edge - the largest 1 in. Backing and spots of light colour touching to folds have diminished these minor imperfections for display. A small numerical ink stamp to reverse bleeds through at lower right corner. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
