Air France commissioned French artist Bernard Villemot to design this dazzling poster to promote tourism to Paris in 1967. Primarily printed in blue and green, the painterly design follows the River Seine from above as one might view the city when approaching by aeroplane, with the lights of the French capital twinkling romantically in the evening light. The city's most famous monuments - the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and the Panthéon - emerge from the verdant scene as the Arc de Triomphe and the Sacré-Cœur Basilica glimmer on the horizon. A pupil of Paul Colin, renowned French graphic artist Bernard Villemot began his famous series of travel posters for Air France in the late 1940s and went on to design advertising campaigns for some of the biggest brands of the time including Orangina, Bally and Perrier. Although employing a looser, more impressionistic style on this Air France poster, Villemot became known for his simple, elegant lines and bold colours as his distinctive style became more abstract with fewer details utilised to convey each advertising message.

Condition

Excellent (A)

Minor bumps to corners and the occasional whisper of fine surface loss at edges. Image and colours excellent.
