Although Western films were shown during the Soviet era in the Communist Bloc, American publicity materials were banned, allowing the state-commissioned artists to operate with total creative freedom from the demands of the big Hollywood studios, offering quirky interpretations which often had little reference to the film. With it's subtle pastels and Art Deco typography, Jerzy Flisak's dreamy golf-themed design for the first Polish release of the 1974 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby delicately evokes the style, spirit and reckless decadence of the Jazz Age. Adapted by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Jack Clayton, the film starred Robert Redford as the mysterious millionaire Gatsby, alongside Mia Farrow as the unattainable Daisy. Visually stunning, the movie went on to win Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Music. An example of this poster is held in the collection of the V&A Museum, London.

    Provenance

    Excellent (A-)

Conservation backed on linen. Backing has smoothed and diminished one horizontal fold. Minor color touching to multiple pinholes at corners. A few small printing flaws where the black ink has failed to take to the paper at Daisy's head, Gatsby's leg and lower edge.
