Numbered BG210 in the celebrated Fillmore poster series, this promotional poster by collage artist David Singer advertised a series of performances by the Byrds with Fleetwood Mac and John Hammond at the Fillmore West in San Francisco from 2-4 January 1970. Prior to Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks joining the group, Fleetwood Mac were, at this point, a blues and boogie band. Five years after their first single, a cover of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man, soared to the top of the charts in 1965, headliners the Byrds had recently undergone one of many line-up changes and were firmly in their country rock era, having just released their eighth album Ballad of Easy Rider. Taking the bands name very literally, Singer designed a collage featuring a stately eagle clutching an American flag in it's beak, perhaps a nod to Peter Fonda's American flag themed bike in the film Easy Rider, for which the title track Ballad of Easy Rider was written. Singer produced 66 posters for legendary promoter Bill Graham and the Fillmore West, more than any other artist during Graham's heyday. Although there are later reprints, this poster has been identified as from the first printing by the tiny brown dot in the upper margin.
