A rare poster for the first Swedish release of the 1958 classic French slapstick comedy Mon Oncle - written, directed, produced by and starring Jacques Tati as the eccentric hero Monsieur Hulot, struggling to fit into an increasingly modern and mechanised France. Tati's satire of post-war consumer society was popular even in the US, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Olle Olsson Hagalund's unique avant-garde artwork for the Swedish release focuses on a lively wheel of colourful toy windmills, representing the colour and movement of Monsieur Hulot's old quarter, illustrated at lower right, in contrast to the minimalist ultramodern villas at lower left. The title, formed from a curling hosepipe, is a nod to the antiseptic hose factory in which our old-fashioned hero gets a job. It appears that Hagalund's design was released in an equally rare four-colour style as well as the three-colour style seen here.

Condition

Very good (B+)

Not backed. Lightly and partially tri-folded with some light creasing along folds. Nicks, creases and a few small tears to corners and edges, the largest ¾ in. to lower edge. Some creasing to upper blue and lower black portions, predominantly at edges. Darkening to edges. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
