Although Western films were shown during the Soviet era in the Communist Bloc, American publicity materials were banned, allowing the state-commissioned artists to operate with total creative freedom from the demands of the big Hollywood studios, offering quirky interpretations which often had little reference to the film. With a design that owes much to the surrealist work of M C Escher, Andrzej Pagowski's fantastically bizarre poster for the original Polish release of 1988 rom-com drama Working Girl features a female figure clad in a 1980s cocktail dress, climbing in killer heels to the top of a staircase formed from the head of a suited man. Starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, the tale of a Staten Island secretary making waves in the big city by taking on the identiy of her boss was a box office smash and scored six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Griffith and Best Supporting Actress for both Weaver and Joan Cusack.
Unfolded, not backed. Small loss to tip of lower right corner. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
